We Won’t Let You Sell Our Lungs to the Trucking Industry (Take Action)

For decades, we’ve dealt with more and more trucks driving past our homes, pumping more pollution into our lungs. Thanks to the trucking industry’s refusal to take responsibility for their toxic pollution, we have the most polluted air in the nation. Today and every day, about 13 people in the Inland Empire will die from toxic air pollution. We subsidize the trucking industry with every one of our children’s asthma attacks, every one of our heart attacks and every death of a loved one.

Last week, our community achieved a major victory when the California Air Resources Board unanimously adopted our community-led resolutions to hold polluters accountable for the damage they’ve caused. But now, the trucking industry is fighting back. For the sake of our human right to breathe, we must stop them. Legislators are making decisions on the bill right now. Here’s how to make a difference in the next five minutes.

The “Assault On Our Lungs” Provision of SB 1

California Trucking Association lobbyists have convinced state legislators to include a provision in Senate Bill 1 that would prevent the California Air Resources Board from standing up for our air and preventing toxic truck pollution in our communities. Specifically, the provision uses overly broad language to allow trucking companies to use older trucks that pollute our air even more.

Time and again, we’ve seen our legislators respond to a strong community voice communicated through emails, social media and especially phone calls. Speaking up makes a real difference.

We only have a short time to take action.

Please call your representative and tell them to eliminate the “Assault On Our Lungs” provision in SB 1. Then, click the tweet links below to tell every state assemblymember and senator that our lungs are not for sale.

When talking to your legislators, here are some points to raise:

  • We’re sick and tired of subsidizing the freight industry with our health. We have given too much through our health and the lives of our loved ones. We will not give any more.
  • We cannot allow the trucking industry to rob public health agencies like the California Air Resources Board of the authority they need to make it safe to breathe in our communities.
  • SB 1 provides benefits to all Californians, but the trucking industry, the single largest creator of smog, is holding it hostage. Please have the courage to stand up to the freight industry and stand up for our children, neighbors and family.
  • The “Assault On Our Lungs” provision of SB 1 must be removed.
