The Time is Now To Build Our Power
All of us at CCAEJ are saddened and outraged at the continuing actions of our government. The callous disregard for the families and young people affected is despicable. Our country finds itself in the grips of multiple disasters – the natural disaster brought on my human activity and social disasters inflicted upon families through misguided and hateful policies. Make no mistakes about it – both are intertwined to the racial perspectives, bigoted beliefs, and “business friendly” policies coming out of the current administration.
The natural disasters – clearly caused by climate change – is resulting in severe flooding and storms in the southeast and horrific fires throughout the west. The increased number and magnitude of the fires is overwhelming the resources California has to fight and protect our communities, placing our firefighters at risk. The refusal to address Climate Change has led to the size and magnitude of the fire storms we are experiencing. Denying science to appease corporate interests is putting us all at risk. Go here for ways you can help.
The same mindset on local decision-making is creating an additional crisis. The people of Texas are suffering not only from the unprecedented storms but from the outrageous policies that leave families vulnerable to the chemical plants and refineries surrounding them. This added danger is a direct result of “business friendly” de-regulation of corporations such as the lack of common sense zoning and right to know laws that all communities deserve. Our friends and allies in Houston need our help now. They live surrounded by chemical plans and refineries that have flooded their homes with chemicals. Donations can be made directly to the communities through T.E.J.A.S. 6731 Harrisburg Blvd. Houston, Texas 77011 or go here.
The social disasters, through ignorant, hateful and unnecessary proclamations and policies are creating unnecessary anxiety, hurt and fear among hundreds of thousands of people across our country and in the military across the world.
The proposed ban of transgender people from military service and their efforts to protect our country is unnecessary, mean-spirited and a disruption to the orderly efforts of our service personnel to do their duties at a time when our leaders move us closer to war. The abhorrent policy is not due to their inability to perform their duties but because of ignorance and prejudice. Go to Equity California to see how you can help fight back.
Today’s announcement to rescind DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) adds a new level of outrage. Children and young people who have known no other country than the U.S. will be deported to lands they do not know. These unnecessary, cruel and disgusting actions are not based on the values and principles upon which the America we strive for and envision to be.
We urge our elected officials at all levels to stand up, denounce these policies, and take action to protect these young people and their families. Contact ICIJ (Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice) to see how you can help.
President Barrick Obama
“What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray. What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals — that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation. That’s how America has traveled this far. That’s how, if we keep at it, we will ultimately reach that more perfect union.”
